On the east end of Palm Springs, you can drive up into the mountains and take a ride on the "Palm Springs Aerial Tramway".  It's a 15 minute gondola ride up to the top of the mountains shown here in the background in the middle.  It is beautiful on top (and cooler) with lots of nature trails to hike down.  Seemed like another great activity to beat the heat of the city.
