Cutting out the old sod (and I don't mean my father) ... the first step in our landscaping project was to nuke the grass and remove the built-up dried-out old turf.  We would supplement the dirt later by rototilling in a topsoil and sand mix toward the end of the project.  My father worked his butt off helping with this part during the parents annual two week summer visit.
