To level some of the hills out (and to move the big pile of dirt to the back) we rented a big backhoe/loader for the weekend.  It took a while to get the feel of using the backhoe, but I got pretty good at it after a few hours.  As you can see in the picture our backyard is on a pretty constant downward slope.
