For the attic space to be usable it needed flooring, so this was
my next project in the old house, initially started in
the winter of 1985. What you see in the picture is an old
beat-up oriental rug over new plywood I had put down in the
main center area.
When pulling up the old rotten flooring in the center area of
the attic, the old original 1920s "tube and knob" electrical
wiring that still remained in most of the rooms was found in
several main floor ceiling areas to be bare wire that turned red
hot when lights were turned on. I found charred sections
of attic flooring and first floor ceiling joists below them
burnt.
This spurred a year long project to rip out all the old wiring
and replace it with new. While doing some of wiring work
in the basement, I decided to replace all the old corroded steel plumbing with copper
pipe as well adding another 3 months to the
project. I took several months off work in the spring of 1986
after certifying the Flight Management System on the Boeing
737-300 aircraft. This was time I used to get the
majority of all this work completed. I didn't take any
pictures of all the electrical wiring and plumbing work.
I pulling wiring and plumbing to the attic area in anticipation
of one day finishing the attic.
