Lawrence George Steffens
Larry G. Steffens, age 71, died on Saturday, October 20, 2007, at his home in Suring, Wisconsin.  Larry was born on December 18, 1935, in Appleton, to the late Lawrence and Dora (Ebben) Steffens.  He attended St. Therese Catholic Grade School and graduated from Appleton West High School in 1954.  Larry married Cleo Liethen at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on November 23, 1957.  He served with the 127th Division of the National Guard and was called to the state of Washington during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1961.  Larry was hired at Asten Forming Fabrics when he was 18 years old.  He worked in the Finishing Department, later becoming Plant Superintendent.  Larry was employed at Asten Forming Fabrics for 35 years; he then was employed at Algoma Hardwoods for seven years until his retirement.

He served as president of the Fox Valley Chapter of the National Management Association from 1985-1986.  Larry belonged to the Pazaza Club and Golden K in Green Bay where he worked at brat fries and Meals on Wheels.  For many years, Larry was president of the Ushers Committee at St. Bernadette Catholic Church.  He also was a volunteer driver for the Veterans Administration.  He enjoyed living at Kelly Lake. Larry also enjoyed reading, playing games on the computer and golf.  He especially enjoyed golfing with friends and family, and belonging to the Mulligan Crew where he met a lot of wonderful people.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Cleo; his daughter, Linda Steffens, Cheyenne, Wyoming; his son, Brian Steffens, Manawa; his son, Dan (Jamie) Steffens, Appleton; his brothers and sisters: Ceil Smith, Little Chute; Marge (Donald) Baer, Appleton; Mary Keller, Mesa, Arizona; Eugene (Connie Bartsch) Steffens, Oshkosh, and Kenneth Steffens (special friend, Mary Anaya), Appleton; his sisters-in-law: Betty Engstrom, Appleton; and Marion Steffens, Santa Barbara, California; his five grandchildren: Samantha and Austin Steffens, Joseph and Chyenne Steffens, and Brent Brouillard; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his 19-year old son, Mark, in 1981; his brothers: Edward, Charles and Florian Steffens; his brothers-in-law: Donald Keller, Clifford Liethen and Lloyd Liethen; and his sister-in-law, June Schroeder.

The Funeral Liturgy will be at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at ST. BERNADETTE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2331 East Lourdes Drive, Appleton, with Fr. Joseph Coopmans officiating.  Friends may call directly at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.  Entombment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Oncology Department at St. Mary's Hospital, Dr. Anthony Jaslowski, Dr. Thomas J. Saphner and Ruth Bloesl, and all the nurses (especially Mary), who took special care of Larry.  They would also like to thank Heartland Home Care and Hospice.  Nurse Barb did a wonderful job making Larry comfortable.  Paul Van Zeeland is especially thanked for his help and caregiving.  The family would also like to thank all the friends that visited and offered to help and sent cards.

A memorial has been established in his name.
