Betty (Hooyman) Steffens-Engstrom, age 89, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at Appleton Medical Center.  Beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, Betty was born March 3, 1925 to the late Ryan and Bertha (Sombke) Hooyman.  She spent her childhood in Appleton, graduating from Appleton High West in 1943.  Married in 1949 to Charles Steffens (deceased), they lived many years in Memphis, TN, Dayton, OH, and Appleton, WI sharing 52 years together.  Betty married Denton Engstrom in 2006 sharing 8 years together.  Betty was a very sweet person with a zest for life that she passed onto everyone whose lives she touched.  She will be greatly missed.

Betty was employed for many years as an executive secretary in Memphis, Dayton, and Neenah.  She retired from Kimberly-Clark Corporation in 1986 after 17 years of employment.  Betty was an active volunteer in schools, churches, and civic organizations throughout her lifetime.  She volunteered at the St. Joseph Food Pantry for many years.  Betty was a member of a very special girlfriends bridge club that has been together since high school.  She enjoyed reading, playing cards, knitting, baking, and gardening.  She was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church.  Betty was a resident of Appleton, and spent winters in Punta Gorda, FL for many years after retirement.

Betty is survived by her husband: Denton Engstrom, 3 sons and daughters-in-law: Bruce and Cathy of Orlando, FL; David and Nan, Orlando, FL; and Alan and Nora of Seattle, WA; 4 grandsons: Jeremy of Alexandria, VA; Benjamin (Kristi) of Griffin, GA; Matt (Kristen) of Chicago, IL; Zach (Amber) of Denver, CO; and 2 granddaughters: Shannon and Hailey of Seattle, WA; and 6 great granddaughters; sisters/brothers-in-law: Mary Anaya, Gene (Connie) Steffens, Cleo (Tom) Weiland, Marian Steffens, Bob (Kay) Engstrom, Jim Engstrom, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents: Ryan (Bertha) Hooyman; her first husband: Charles Steffens, her 4 sisters/brothers-in-law: Mildred (Robert) Kranhold, Ramona (Tom) Butler, Florence (John) Fentz, and Virginia (Alby) Bevers; her sisters-in-law: Ceil Smith, Mary (Don) Keller, Marge (Don) Baer; her brothers-in-law: Florian Steffens, Larry Steffens, Edward Steffens, and Kenneth Steffens.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 18, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Appleton with Rev. William Van Dyn Hoven officiating.  Friends may visit the family Saturday directly at Church from 9:00 AM until the time of Mass.  Entombment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Appleton.
