Appleton is one of the main birthplaces of the paper industry.  My Mom worked at the Appleton Wire Works in High School and remembered Bill Buchanan, the CEO.  Bill was loved by everyone who worked there and it is said that he knew everyone by name. My Mother according to our Great Aunt Clara, was named after Bill's wife, Betty Jean Buchanan.  Betty Jean supposedly had a social gathering at their mansion that my Grandmother Bertha attended.  Bertha was so enamoured with Betty Jean's grace and charm that she named her last daughter Betty Jean in her honor.
